The N cards are view cards on
smooth paper, night scenes which use shadow and silhouette for a dreamy
impression, rather than the usual precisely-detailed day views.
They are novelty cards, of a sort, but not like modern chrome cards of
"Atlantic City at Night" with a solid black side. In
these scenes a moon lights up features, and often the windows of
buildings pictured are busily lighted. The card below pictures
Madison Square Garden; similar cards exist for Washington, DC, such as
N225, the Bureau of Pensions building.

Besides
the N cards proper, I am listing here the NPG group. These are very
different cards, and perhaps do not belong on this page at all, except
to simplify the system of categories used. The NPG group of cyanotypes
boast a new RP method, Neue Photographische Geselischaft, as is written
inside a tiny circle on the face of each card. They feature Dutch
scenes, whether landscapes or seascapes, or people posed in various
activities. Many of these carry a subseries number, in one group
as high as 18.
NPG 608/6.
